Doe’s Eat Place
I started following Theresa Overby on Twitter when my wife and I decided to move to Baton Rouge a few months ago. Theresa is the Social Media voice behind VisitBatonRouge.com and she supplies a steady steam of great posts on things to do in the area. Since I am totally new to Baton Rouge, her tweets provide a perfect roadmap for exploring the city.
But then I found out she was also the owner of Doe’s Eat Place! Since I am committed to supporting local businesses, and since Theresa was so warm and welcoming to this BR newbie on Twitter, it was a no-brainer that Doe’s Eat Place had to be at the top of my list for a visit.
My Dad was down from New York for a visit and he’s a meat and potatoes kind of guy, so I decided to treat him to what everyone in town says are the “Best steaks in Baton Rouge”. Doe’s didn’t disappoint.
With all the raves I’ve heard about their steaks, I was worried that this place was going to be fancy and pretentious. It’s not. It’s totally like an Upstate New York hunting lodge complete with plank floors, checkered tablecloths, and stuffed ducks flying overhead—a totally casual and relaxing atmosphere. Our server, Nicole, was great. She was funny, clever, personable, and best of all, patient as we fumbled over our order (and she is also a chef!). Dad and I felt totally at home.
Oh, I have to mention one weird thing. As we pulled up to the restaurant, we noticed that the sign said “World Famous Steaks and Hot Tamales Since 1941”. Huh? Hot tamales? At a steakhouse? Dad and I just looked at each other and laughed. “Must be a Southern thing”, he says. I immediately start humming Robert Johnson’s “They’re Red Hot”. I don’t know if it’s a Southern thing or not, but I can tell you that we couldn’t resist ordering them.
Turns out that they are in fact Southern: Mississippi Delta style (I nailed it with the Robert Johnson tune!). The corn dough was perfectly moist and savory and they were accompanied by a bowl of chili. I’m not sure how they were cooked, but they didn’t seem steamed like traditional tamales are prepared, boiled maybe? It doesn’t matter…the tamales were great!
The meals at Doe’s come with a salad. Dad asked for“1000 Island dressing” on his. LOL, Damn Yankee. I tried the house dressing; a simple coating of lemon, olive oil, and garlic. It occurred to me that all of these years I have been drowning the actual flavor of this uncomplicated staple with dressings. The lemon, olive oil, and garlic combination is subtle and reminds you that you are eating a salad! I actually tasted the ingredients for the very first time. I don’t know if I can ever go back to regular salad dressing now.
We were both speechless when the steaks arrived. They were beautiful. Works of art. We almost wept. And huge! I ordered a medium rare T-Bone. Dad got the cowboy cut ribeye. Both were cooked perfectly, the juices running onto the plate as we cut in. I wish I could have seen the marbling on my steak before it hit the grill…it must have looked like a roadmap of NYC! I’ve been to some of the top steakhouses in New York, and these were right up there with the best of the best. These are serious steaks for serious steak-lovers, without all the pomp and circumstance and “formal ceremony” required at those fancy places. Doe’s is real steak for real people.
I could go on and on about this place: The hand-cut fries, the fried drop-biscuits and honey, the great beer selection, the mac and cheese. But this post is too long already.
Bottom line: If you’re a steak lover, you’ll love Doe’s Eat Place.
Note: My first experience was so good that I took my wife to Doe’s a few days later. We ordered the porterhouse and filet this time and they were also absolutely amazing.
